PENUMBRA

Description

I played Penumbra when it was just a tech demo before the release of the comercial game, Penumbra: Overture. I found it amazing and very creepy. The game surprised me by its originality and frightening atmosphere. The ability to open doors and peer into them, to open and close drawers gives an immersion in the game that has no other. You walk in the dark so slowly, aware of the monster how you ear to crawl.

Due to the success of the Amnesia illustration I had in mind to pay tribute to the game making an illustration of Phillip, another adventurer alone in a forgotten mine searching for the remains of his father.

I haven't finished Penumbra Overture. After playing some Amnesia mods, I resume my journey through the mine and finish the game at last. Immediately I began to play Black Plague and found it as scary as Amnesia and better than Overture. That inspired me so much to begin to make a previous sketch of the illustration in the same way I do for Amnesia. Then I finish Penumbra: Requiem and finally I render the illustration.

You may notice that Red is taken from a still of Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's film "The Thing". He matches great for the role!. I thought that this film have influenced very much the game. Nobody can play it without remember that awesome film and this is my little tribute to both pieces of art.

Penumbra series are excellent games from Frictional games. [link]

First off, I would just like to say that this is honestly mind blowing. Just scanning over it, there are several factors that tie in together and produce a stunning final product, and many of the game's aspects are held true in this very piece.

To start, the portrayal of Phillip here is a very down to earth and realistic conception of what we experience in the game, almost seemingly helpless in nature. This is very well indicated not only by his body language and stance with a weapon, but by his facial expression too. Phillips state of mind shown in this photograph plays a substantial role due to the situation his character has plunged into, and had he appeared to be more powerful and less weary, all effort would have been for nil. I congratulate you on effectively and accurately maintaining Phillip's character composition. The shadows which envelope his face and certain parts of his body also add a dark and eerie feeling to this observation as well.

Next up, which what I feel is the most important part, is the depiction of Red. I saw John Carpenter's "The Thing" about 3 years back, and since then, I felt that it related very well, if not, held hands with "Penumbra" for a variety of reasons. I then noticed how Kurt Russell filled in for Red, and I agreed with your choice that he would indeed be the best possible match that there is. Just by looking at him though, his overall demeanor seems to be that of much regret and remorse Upon further inspection, I see you included the game's introductory speech right alongside Kurt, and I personally think it fit in almost perfectly. The only small problem that I found with this entire picture that slightly confused me though, is that the adjacent text reads superfluously until the line
"…by the time you read this…" Looking back and forth between Kurt and said text, I see that Kurt is holding what appears to be a microphone, and this may confuse your audience the same way it did me.

And the final part that ties in, last but not least, is the open hatch on the backdrop of an empty frozen-land. The open hatch induces gut wrenching emotions of dread and fear for entering an unknown, alienistic environment, where we know nothing about what is in store.

The simple placement techniques of certain images can make a monumental difference on how something is perceived and judged. I want to commend you on putting together an image that gives the audience a glimpse of the story while sparking major interest without having to reveal unnecessary information. That in itself is a very hard thing to be able to do these days, but you performed stupendously and I have rated you accordingly. Yes there is room for small, almost invisible improvements, but to be honest, this is too near to excellent to criticize, especially when I myself cannot do this.

I am excited and happy to say that you have recieved from me, an average rating of 4.5/5.0.

Good job, and keep up the wonderful work, I look forward to seeing more from you <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>
